We arrived to Cairo airport at midnight, got our passports stamped soon after, however retrieving our baggage from the belts is what took the longest. The driver was waiting for us outside. I have been using this particular driver since 2007 as I feel very secure and comfortable with him as he is a very decent and honest man. I pay him 200LE a day. We reached New Maadi, where our appartment is, at around 2am.
The next morning on Friday 31st December, we woke up around midday, cleaned the appartment, and then went to visit the mother-in-law shortly after. Later that evening at 7.30pm we went to Carrefour to do some grocery shopping. It was very crowded as it was New Years Eve. My daughter and I had dinner at ‘Chillies’ which cost 126LE. We did not spend too much time there because of the previously mentioned crowds. So we went back home around 10pm, and got to bed not too long after the New Year as we were still tired from the previous day flight.
On Saturday morning, my daughter went out to spend the day at the nadi with her cousins, while I stayed at home with the maid who was cleaning the rest of the house from what I had already started the day before. I booked dinner for 7pm at ‘Nubian Village’ in the Grand Hyatt hotel. The restaurant was fairly decent, the food was okay, however I feel as thought it was slightly pricey for just an adult and child, I paid a total of 341LE plus tips. We walked around in the ‘Gardenia Mall’for a while, and then went to Hilton Ramsis annexe for some refreshments, followed by some shopping, and then eventually going back home around midnight.
On Sunday, there wasn’t much to do, however since having already booked to stay at the Holiday Inn from London, I went to the hotel to confirm my reservation and pay. It cost 2,212LE for a double room for two nights, the price is strictly for those of Egyptian nationality. I am originally Moroccan although I have accquired the Egyptian nationality through being married to an Egyptian.
On Monday morning, I woke up at 9am and had already arranged with the driver that he come to collect me at 11am to go ‘Saida Zineb’ to visit the famous grave. I wanted to have lunch at ‘Abu Ramy’ however when I arrived there I learnt it was closed, so I had koshary at Grand Mall in Maadi instead. In the evening I went to the Nile Maxim, which I had already prebooked for, and to avoid the traffic I left home at 6.30 and arrived at 7.30. After confirming my name on the checklist I went inside and sat down with my daughter. The waiter informed me that the salad is all you can eat buffet, however the the main course was by menu. At 8.15pm the boat started moving, it was surprisingly fully booked and busy even though the weather was quite cold. The majority of the people were Colombian and Indian. The entertainment was better than what I expected it to be, however the food wasn’t all that great compared to the price I paid for it. I ordered the lamb with vegetables and rice, while my daughter ordered the same but in the chicken option, we then had cheesecake and ice cream to conclude. I paid exactly 650LE. I enjoyed the show, but I still prefer Marquis boat in Grand Hyatt hotel. We left at 10pm and went back home.
Tuesday wasn’t special in any way, I just went to ‘Wekalet Al Balah’ to purchase some curtains.
On Wednesday I was supposed to have lunch at ‘Planet Africa’ in the Mohandeseen branch, however on the way by Nile corniche, it started raining heavily and the traffic was at stand still, and as my daughter gets car sick easily, I decided to change plans and asked the driver to drop us at ‘Nile Mall’. However I was very disappointed at how dead the mall was as one side of the mall was completely shut while the other only had a few shops open. We sat in the ‘Triannon’ and had some juices and deserts and then we walked to ‘Cinema Family’ and watched Ahmed Helmy movie called ‘Bolbol Hayran’ and had dinner at TGI Friday’s on the Nile corniche. We had steak and vegetable and paid around 150LE each. We went back home soon after.
On Thursday I just went to visit some Moroccan friends, one of which who had just recently given birth. I went to New Cairo to visit her.
On Friday, we went to the nadi with the in laws for some lunch. And at 7pm we went to ‘Al Hussein’ to buy some small souveniers for my daughter to bring home to her classmates back in London. We then we went to ‘Nagib Mahfouz’ restaurant and had some kofta sandwiches and drinks. We then went back home.
On Saturday I woke up and cleaned the appartment and packed up the furniture. By 2 o’clock I was I was on my way to the Holiday Inn hotel, for which I had paid and booked for a few days earlier, as the check in was at 3pm. I said goodbye to the driver as I would no longer require his services, and checked in and was very impressed and pleased with the room I was staying in with my daughter. We got changed and had a rest for an hour or so before leaving to go back out. I called for a taxi and asked to go to ‘Tivoli Dome’. The taxi cost around 15LE. I liked the place, it was a nice and new to me, my sister insisted on having lunch at Burger King, I walked around for a while and took some photo’s, however if it was in summer I would have enjoyed it more as the open air made me feel like it was too cold to stay and enjoy it longer. So I decided to go to ‘Genina Mall’ which cost 10LE in taxi, and did more shopping, bought some sweets from ‘Tssepass’. We went back to the hotel, changed clothes and then went out for City Stars mall which is practically next door to the hotel. We had a little snack at Beanos, carried on walking around the mall until 11pm by which time we were exhausted so we went back to the hotel for a shower and sleep.
On Sunday, we woke up and had breakfast which was included with the room fare. I wanted to watch an Arabic movie at the cinema however my daughter wanted to watch the 3D movie called ‘Tangled’ which cost 50LE each, plus 15LE each for the 3D glasses. After the cinema I called my friend just to say goodbye as I was due to return to London the next day. However she insisted that I join her for fish, so I went to McDonalds so my daughter could have lunch as I know she does not like fish, and then went to my friends home at 4pm. Around 9pm my friend dropped me back to the hotel and as my flight was early the next morning, I decided to stay in and relax and call it a day.
The next day I woke up quite early at 4am and woke my daughter up 5.45am. At 6.15am the porter came and took down our cases, I checked out and waited in the lobby for my brother-in-law to come and take us to the airport. I got to the airport at 6.50am and checked in with British Airways as my flight was at 8.50am. Whilst checking in my luggage, I was told my flight had been upgraded but I didn’t know what this meant, until I arrived on board to find that the seats were much wider and comfortable than usual, and the plane was double decker, so I managed to sleep for the whole flight. I arrived back in London at 11.45am GMT.
We’ve been to Egypt several times during the summer and a few times during the winter, however I was a little disappointed this time by the weather. But in general I prefer coming in the winter as there are less tourists. I would like to hope that this report has given a little eye opener to you as the reader and this is just my way of showing gratitude to you as I have learnt a lot about Cairo from fellow writers.

يوم السبت استيقظت وتنظيف الشقة وحزموا الأثاث. من 2:00 كنت كنت في طريقي الى الفندق هوليداي إن ، والتي دفعت لي وحجزت لبضعة أيام في وقت سابق ، كما في الاختيار كان في 15:00. قلت وداعا للسائق وأنا لن تحتاج إلى خدماته ، ودققت في وأعجبت جدا ويسر مع الغرفة كنت في البقاء مع ابنتي. حصلنا على تغيير وكان بقية لمدة ساعة أو نحو ذلك قبل ان يغادر ليعود خارج. دعوت إلى سيارة أجرة وطلب منه الذهاب إلى 'قبة تيفولي. تكلفة سيارة أجرة حول 15LE. مشيت أحببت المكان ، أنها كانت جميلة وجديدة بالنسبة لي ، أختي أصر على تناول الغداء في برغر كينغ ، حولها لبعض الوقت ، واتخذت بعض في الصورة ، ولكن إذا كان عليه في الصيف كنت قد استمتعت به أكثر وفتح أدلى لي أشعر بأن الهواء كان الطقس باردا جدا في البقاء والتمتع بها لفترة أطول. لذا قررت أن أذهب إلى 'جنينة مول' التي كلفت 10LE في سيارة أجرة ، وفعل أكثر التسوق وشراء بعض الحلوى من 'Tssepass. عدنا إلى الفندق ، وتغيير الملابس ثم خرج لمول سيتي ستارز الذي هو عمليا بجوار الفندق. كان لدينا وجبة خفيفة قليلا في Beanos ، التي تقوم على المشي حول مول حتى 11:00 وهو الوقت الذي كنا استنفدت حتى عدنا إلى الفندق للاستحمام والنوم.
